Great Synagogue
of Vilnius Virtual Tour

Overview

The Great Synagogue of Vilnius project, developed by Litvak World in collaboration with our company, is an innovative virtual reality reconstruction of a significant Jewish architectural landmark. Using VR technology, the project offers an immersive tour inside and outside the synagogue, which was demolished in the mid-20th century. This virtual experience demonstrates the future potential of museums, galleries, history lessons, and the entire education system.

Project Background

VR Project Development

Vilnius, often referred to as the "Jerusalem of the North," had a rich Jewish cultural heritage epitomized by the Great Synagogue of Vilnius. Serving as the center of Jewish life for centuries, the synagogue was destroyed in 1957. This project aims to commemorate and preserve the memory of the Great Synagogue and its cultural significance. The virtual tour allows users to explore the synagogue as it stood in its prime, bringing history to life through advanced VR technology.
To accurately recreate the Great Synagogue, our team conducted extensive research with historians, geologists, and architects. This involved gathering historical facts, visual materials, and personal accounts. We collected original religious songs and visual and textual documentation and consulted with experts to ensure precise measurements and details.
Using the Unity engine, we developed detailed 3D models of the synagogue, replicating its architectural features and interior decor with a high degree of realism. The VR environment was enriched with authentic textures and lighting effects to represent the materials and atmosphere accurately. The project supports multiple languages (English, Russian, Lithuanian) and is designed for use on PC with HTC Vive and Oculus platforms. The interactive VR experience allows users to navigate the synagogue’s interior and exterior, gaining a comprehensive understanding of its historical significance.

The virtual tour of the Great Synagogue of Vilnius showcases how VR technology can revolutionize historical and cultural education. By providing a detailed and immersive reconstruction of a lost architectural treasure, this project aids in preserving cultural heritage, enhancing educational experiences, and engaging a wide audience. This innovative approach aligns with the mission to commemorate and celebrate the rich history of the Jewish community in Vilnius.
